Fluctuations and noise in photonics and quantum optics: a special issue in memory of Hermann Haus Article in Journal of Optics B Quantum and Semiclassical Optics 6:S August with 13 . Several examples are discussed, which show that the quantum noise of the nonclassical photons partly destroys the electron interference fringes. An interesting application arises in the context of distant electron interference devices, irradiated with entangled photons.

(formerly the Encyclopedia of Laser Physics and Technology) is a large scientifically founded encyclopedia on optics and photonics, which serves both scientific researchers and industrial professionals worldwide. comprehensive encyclopedia articles on optics and photonics, optoelectronics, quantum optics, fiber optics, light pulses, laser technology, gas discharge lamps, . (Note that according to Wikipedia, in general, shot noise is a type of noise which can be modeled by a Poisson process.) It is the noise purely arising form (vacuum) fluctuations of the EM-field. For example, the book of Gerry and Knight states that "In an actual experiment, the signal beam is first blocked in order to obtain the shot-noise level.".

Recent years have seen amazing progress in detecting manipulating single photons, in the infrared, visible and even microwave bands. But detecting single photons in the radio-frequency (RF) band, at megahertz frequencies, is a tougher nut to crack, because—even in cryogenically cooled systems—background thermal fluctuations easily overwhelm the delicate, long-wavelength quantum . The thermal and zero-point motion of electrically charged particles inside materials gives rise to a fluctuating electromagnetic field. Quantum theory tells us that the fluctuating particles can only assume discrete energy states and, as a consequence, the emitted fluctuating radiation takes on the spectral form of blackbody radiation.

In pulsed OPO’s this can lead to fluctuations in such macroscopic signal properties as rise time, pulse energy, frequency spectrum, and transverse profile. The strength of these fluctuations is investigated by use of simulation models that include quantum noise, multiple longitudinal modes, dispersion.

Quantum Optics Including Noise Reduction, Trapped Ions, Quantum Trajectories, and Decoherence Einstein's Theory of Atom-Radiation Interaction.- Atom-Field Interaction: Semiclassical Approach The material here is very rarely presented in the context of quantum optics.

The history of the theory of the quantum fluctuations in a laser is then reviewed. An off-shoot of this theory is the study of quantum chaos in dissipative systems and recent results in this new area are given in a succeeding article.

We present investigations of the the relative intensity noise (RIN) of a quantum cascade laser (QC) laser in continuous wave operation. We analyze the intensity noise properties in terms of the relative intensity noise (RIN).

In contrast to conventional interband semiconductor diode lasers we obtain a different scaling behavior of RIN with increasing optical output power for QC lasers. Quantum trajectory equations are formulated for continuous variable teleportation, which model the generation of finite bandwidth squeezed light, the homodyne measurements carried out by Alice, and take into account the continuous feed-forward of Alice's measurement results to Bob.
